In an event as rare as Halley’s Comet, some local grandkids have this week witnessed the clam shell of their stern Grandpa’s protective facade be shucked wide open by a heartwarming animated show about dogs.

Stoic grandpa and lifelong tough guy Barry, 72, was emotionally unprepared when what he thought was going to be a straight forward kid’s cartoon about bat and ball turned into an impactful exploration of the spirit of cricket that pulled at his heartstrings until tears rolled down his leathery cheeks.

Following his usual procedure of standing a metre behind the couch eating peanuts and heckling “What’s this drivel?” to any show that isn’t ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’, Barry found himself getting sucked in deeper than he ever thought possible. After a lifetime of stiff-lipping it, his tough-guy persona was swiftly undone in only seven minutes by a kids cartoon using cricket as a vehicle to explore determination, sportsmanship and family.

Barry thought he was having a stroke when his eyes started filling with some sort of liquid, but soon realised it was “something far worse”, a public display of emotions.

Caught in the act of not-bottling-it-in by one of his grandkids who immediately notified everyone present, Barry was overheard muttering, “now that's what cricket’s about” as he wiped away tears with a scouring pad.

Promptly composing himself, Grandpa Barry proceeded to heavily overcompensate by cracking a beer, punching a hole in the wall and disappearing into the shed to “weld some shit together”.

This emotional display continues a horror run for Barry who was recently consoled for seeming “a bit flat” at the Men’s Shed and was just last week spotted by a car full of the darts lads laying flowers on his wife’s grave.

More to come.
