A Victorian man has been denied clearance for a Working With Children Check (WWCC) after the screening process flagged him as a wearer of transition lenses. The anonymous applicant, who will go by the pseudonym Jimmy Rockspider, is challenging the outcome and has submitted complaints to VCAT alleging profiling and discrimination based on his appearance alone.

“I’m disabled and without these variably tinted disability aids I can barely see 100 metres ahead of me if it’s foggy”, explained Jimmy, “So when I was profiled so brutally by the Department of Justice and Community Safety I was absolutely shattered.”

“As a sufferer of mild short-sightedness I have to wear transition lenses because, as my optometrist strongly implied, an abrupt change in brightness could burn my eyeballs out of my eyeholes.”

Jimmy is appalled at his treatment, especially given his application for a WWCC was an important step in his efforts to give back to the community.

“Childcare centres are crying out for educators and, having a heart of gold, I was responding to that call when I was so unfairly discriminated against by prejudiced bureaucrats from one glance at my tinted specs.”

“I have a strong case”, Jimmy continued, “and I’m really not asking for much, just approval of my WWCC, a disabled parking permit and $1million in cash.”

For Jimmy it’s all about sending a message.

“I’ll show these paper pushers that just because 92% of paedos wear transition lenses it doesn’t mean 100% of transition lens wearers are paedos”, Jimmy argued, “assuming I’m a paedophile based on my appearance is a crime and just because they got it right this time doesn’t make it right.”
